Samsung Galaxy S5 Rumors.

Company Could Stick with Present Naming Conventions, More Release Info Leaked.

JANUARY 30, 2014

For companies such as Apple and Google, less is more when it comes to naming some of their devices.  While the third- and fourth-generation iPad are commonly known as iPad 3 and iPad 4 respectively, those are not their official names, as Apple decided to do away with numbering or special names until the release of the iPad Air in November 2013.  Similar to Apple’s case, Google’s Nexus 7 is officially known as Nexus 7 (2012) or Nexus 7 (2013) depending on iteration (or just plain “Nexus 7”), and not Nexus 7.1 or Nexus 7.2.    As for Samsung, whose Galaxy S phones are traditionally numbered by iteration, it looks like the Korean company will push forward with this naming convention with the Galaxy S5, according to a new tweet from @evleaks.

This latest Samsung Galaxy S5 rumor may sound a bit too obvious, but as mentioned above, certain companies prefer not to number their devices to tell one generation from the other.  That won’t happen to Samsung, though, as @evleaks tweeted earlier today that Samsung is “sticking with a winner, name-wise.”  His Twitter message came with a curious background image with the words “Galaxy S5”, and it’s been speculated that that may be new wallpaper for the unannounced flagship phone.

Meanwhile, a separate report from Sam Mobile claims that model numbers previously leaked for the Galaxy S5 are indeed accurate, and SM-G900 will indeed pertain to the upcoming handset.  SM-G900A and SM-G900V would be for the AT&T and Verizon editions, just as earlier leaked.  The report also included a variety of other model numbers that would correspond to versions from Europe, Asia, Japan, Korea and other markets and carriers.  And while this bit of release information might not add much to existing details hinting at a February/March launch and April/May release date, the report does include model numbers for Sprint, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular, three carriers expected to offer the Galaxy S5  but whose versions hadn’t appeared on model number leaks until now.

Samsung galaxy note 3: Rose Gold

Rose Gold Samsung Galaxy Note 3 now available from Verizon

Jan 29th 2014 by Quentyn Kennemer

We’d heard Verizon would be the exclusive carrier of the rose gold Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and now the carrier has made it official. The device is now available for $250 on a two-year contract over at Verizon Wireless. You also have the option of getting it on Verizon Edge for 24 monthly installments of $27.15, or $649.99 altogether.
note-3-gold-accents-
Folks should know that it isn’t actually rose gold atop the rest of the chassis, but a painted strip around each side of the device that makes it look more premium. Some might like it, some might not. Either way, it’s the same exact device we’ve been enjoying since late 2013.
Those interested will be greeted to a ridiculous suite of silicon to power Android and TouchWiz sitting on board:
  • 5.7-inch 1080p HD display
  • 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 13 megapixel camera
  • 2 megapixel front camera
  • 32GB of internal storage w/ microSD card up to 64GB
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • WiFi ac
  • GPS
  • 3,200mAh
  • Android 4.3 with TouchWiz and S-Pen
That good enough for you? If that alone doesn’t impress you, perhaps our review of this beast will do the trick. It’s going to be a powerhouse for months to come, so don’t fret that it isn’t the newest kid on the block anymore. Grab it from Verizon’s site here if you’re interested.

Samsung Galaxy S5 said to sport a fingerprint sensor.

News
JANUARY 20, 2014 9:35 AM ESTIAN HARDY

It’s now known that Samsung will be launching the Galaxy S5 “by April” and it will be more “about the display and the feel of the cover.”

A new report from the Korea Herald is citing unnamed sources predicting that Samsung will follow Apple and HTC by embedding a fingerprint sensor within the device to perform various tasks for the users, such as authentication. The sources noted, “Among the different types of biometric sensors that Samsung is testing for its Galaxy S5, the tech giant will go for fingerprint authentication rather than unintuitive user experience of iris recognition.”

Rumoured specs of what this flagship might be packed with have ranged from a 5.25-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED (2560×1440 pixels), 16MP camera, 3GB of RAM, plastic and metal versions, running KitKat and its new TouchWIZ UI.

Samsung is expected to officially unveil the Galaxy S5 at an event in London this March, with global availability following. For now, all rumours and speculation.

Samsung Galaxy Lite 3

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite confirmed by leaked official user manual.

The heavily rumored Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite has been confirmed by an official user manual leaked by Samsung itself.

Although Samsung has yet to officially announce the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite, the official user manual for the tablet was published on the Samsung Poland website with the model number SM-T110.

The Samsung Poland site is already accepting orders for the Tab 3 Lite as well, asking for £100 for the Wi-Fi only model or £160 for the 3G option. This puts the tablet near the very bottom of the Samsung tablets, making it an affordable option for consumers.

Samsung is no doubt aiming to compete with the likes of the Tesco Hudl and Argos MyTablet with the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite.

According to the user manual the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite will have a 7-inch 600 x 1024p resolution display running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

It will be powered by a 1.2GHz Marvell PXA986 processor, a Vivante GC1000 GPU with 1GB of RAM. There’s 8GB of internal storage too, bolstered by a microSD card slot.

In the rear is a 2-mepgaixel camera, but there’s no front-facing video calling option whatsoever.

Running on a 3,600mAh battery, the Tab 3 Lite measures up at 193 x 117 x 9.7mm and weighs 130g. This makes it slightly larger and a little heavier than the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 launched last year.

Looking at the user manual and the image Samsung Poland users for the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite page, don’t expect any major design changes with the low-end 2014 tablet.

Samsung is heavily expected to launch the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite at MWC 2014 or at a special event just after the Barcelona-based tech show with the Samsung Galaxy S5 and next-generation Samsung Galaxy Gear.

MINI WARS

Mini Wars: Sony Xperia Z1 Compact vs Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini vs LG G2 Mini.

Which is the best compact Android smartphone around? The Xperia Z1 Compact, Galaxy S4 Mini and the G2 Mini face off in our comparison.

In a mobile world hurling towards bigger and taller devices, some manufacturers are downsizing their offerings for users who prefer smaller, more compact handsets. While Samsung has downsized more than just the display of the Galaxy S4 Mini, Sony has taken the novel approach of building the Xperia Z1 Compact with fully loaded specs and s smaller screen. LG is all set to join the bandwagon with its own G2 Mini. Which, then, is likely to offer the best bang for your buck? KYMI finds out.

Form
Xperia Z1 Compact: 127 x 64.9 x 9.5mm, 137g
Galaxy S4 Mini: 124.6 x 61.3 x 8.9mm, 107g
G2 Mini: 4.3-inch screen

Just like its big brother Xperia Z1, the Xperia Z1 Compact is durable and built of premium materials. Its straight lines and barely there curves give it a modern, edgy feel while its aluminium surround and front and back Dragontrail glass casing make it look like a high-end device.

Samsung has given the Galaxy S4 Mini the same form factor as the Galaxy S4. The phone's light weight and curved casing make it ever so easy to grip and carry around but its plasticy build doesn't make it look like a premium device.

The G2 Mini is rumoured to look like the flagship G2 in most ways, including sporting a set of rear volume and power keys. The build quality of the device is expected to be good and given how sleek LG's latest offerings are, the G2 Mini is likely to be well designed.

Being compact, all three handsets will be comfortable to carry and use. While LG surely wins kudos for its modern design and Samsung for the light weigh of its offering, Sony takes home the trophy in this round with durability and build of the Xperia Z1 Compact.

Winner: Xperia Z1 Compact

Android 4.4 KitKat.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 getting Android 4.4 KitKat software now.

Just last week there was news about whether or not the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note 3 will be getting updated to the Android 4.4 KitKat software anytime soon and now it looks like at least one of them will be.  According to online sources, the Android 4.4 KitKat software will start rolling out for the Galaxy Note 3 today.  The update has not been reported in the United States, but it has started to roll out in other regions of the world, so it will only be a matter of time before notifications start to show up here.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is available for a reduced sale price now starting at $192.49 – $779.99.
The Android 4.4 KitKat software will replace the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean software that came along with the device when it launched back in September of last year.  The initial rumors indicated that users would see the new software sometime this month, but as of last week, there was little information to support that.  That all changed this week when the first users started to report the update in Poland.  Because Samsung has not confirmed the update for the Galaxy S4, that could be pushed out until next month or even March.
Most of the time, updates for the Galaxy Note have come after the Galaxy S device of the same year has been updated and that make sense as the “S” smart phone it typically released before the Note model.  The model of the Galaxy Note found in Poland match the one that is found in the United States so it might not be all that long before users in the United States see it.  Samsung has not come forward with exactly what is different about the device, but change logs that have been leaked online can give you an idea of what to expect.

New camera shortcut on the lock screen is one thing that you will notice, plus you will have the choice to show album art on your lock screen while listening to music.  Improved keyboard, choice between messaging and Hangouts applications, just to name a few of the features you can expect.  Even though the main software is getting a little bump from Jelly Bean to KitKat, Samsung is likely to add a few things of its own like the ones listed above.  The Galaxy Note 3 is available on AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular in the United States.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 can be purchased at a discounted price tag now starting at $192.49 – $779.99.

Samsung S5 & HTC 2

Samsung Galaxy S5 & HTC 2 release dates suggestions clashing announcements

The HTC Two and Samsung Galaxy S5 are two devices that are very much talked about and anticipated. Sources have said that the two handsets may arrive in April and February of this year. There has been a rumour going around February thanks to the Mobile World Congress being held that month in Barcelona. Recently a judge in an infringement case between Nokia and the HTC let it slip that the device from HTC would arrive in February. Last year Samsung launched the Samsung Galaxy S4 at the Mobile World Congress.
A judge was said to have given away the HTC One M8 release date when he said “HTC paints a dramatic picture of what will happen am bound to say I am somewhat skeptical about this evidence given that HTC will shortly be launching a new flagship phone which cannot be assumed to infringe and therefore be caught by the injunction. Nevertheless, I accept that there is a period between now and February or March 2014 when HTC is vulnerable.”
The court case could see a ban on the sale of the HTC One Mini in the UK and the HTC 8X. The injunction has been put on hold for now.
The CES and MWC are the biggest trade shows. Samsung chose the MWC 2013 to reveal the Samsung Galaxy S4, while the CES 2013 was their choice for the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. This suggests that Samsung may reveal the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Samsung Galaxy S5 at the events this year.

Another report suggests that maybe this may change and the Samsung Galaxy S5 could make its way out in April, with Samsung launching the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and the new Galaxy F series at an earlier date. Rumours have suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S5 could have a camera of 16MP, a 64-bit processor, metal body and a curved display of 2k resolution. Nothing has been said about what to expect from the HTC One M8.

Release: Samsung S5 features.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Release Date, Features, & Specs: Device May Scan Eyes.

It seems that Samsung's Galaxy S5 will have the ability to scan retinas in what the company is calling "innovative eye-scan technology."
According to CNN, the news came from Samsung's executive vice president of mobile business, Lee Young Hee, who spoke about it exclusively at the Consumer Electronics Show... though she did indicate that it wasn't a 100 percent sure thing on what is soon to be the flagship phone of Apple's top mobile rival.
"We've been announcing our first flagship model in the first half of each year, around March and April, and we are still targeting for release around that time," Lee said. "When we release our S5 device, you can also expect a Gear successor with more advanced functions, and the bulky design will also be improved.
"Many people are fanatical about iris recognition technology. We are studying the possibility but can't really say whether we will have it or not on the S5.

"When we moved to S4 from S3, it's partly true that consumers couldn't really feel much difference between the two products from the physical perspective, so the market reaction wasn't as big. For the S5, we will go back to the basics. Mostly, it's about the display and the feel of the cover," she said.
But according to Bloomberg News, Samsung has seen a bump in their sales. "The company also sees more growth potential in tablets as it takes on Apple's iPad line and Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle devices. The tablet computer market will grow more than 15 percent annually, with more than 240 million units shipped last year, Shin Jong Kyun, head of Samsung's mobile business, said Nov. 6.
"Samsung's share of global tablet shipments doubled to about 20 percent last year, Lee Young Hee said. The company, which shipped more than 40 million units in 2013, aims to drive sales growth of its mobile business, which accounts for more than 60 percent of the company's operating profit, to fend off margin pressure from the slowing high-end Smartphone segment," reports the site.

Samsung Galaxy S5

Samsung Galaxy S5 release date in April and to be very different than Galaxy S4

Rumors that have been adrift are that Samsung will be releasing its S5 in April of 2014. In terms of the device itself, it’s thought that customers will get to see a large, high-resolution display, a new Samsung-made Exynos chip using 64-bit technology, enhanced camera capabilities, waterproofing and, possibly, more premium materials used to construct the device. The Samsung Galaxy S5 could be equipped with an iris scanner or fingerprint scanner, or possibly even both, according to rumors and a comment from a Samsung representative. First up, the iris scanner.
It is heard from a viable source that Samsung executive that the Galaxy S5 is being made to look very different from its predecessor the Galaxy S4 variant after Samsung received feedbacks from customers who felt there was insufficient variation from the Galaxy S3. Speculations have it that the whole back panel will be made from stainless steel and will secure to a plastic and composite front fascia.
It is believed that Samsung’s rumored F Series smart phone will be a premium edition of the Galaxy S5 and it’ll be built from a range of materials including plastic, metal and other composite materials. Allegedly all of this is done to reduce weight while making the phone more durable and more pleasing to consumers in terms of look and feel. Prior to all the news surrounding the release to Bloomberg by Samsung mobile chief Lee Young He, where she confirmed the approximate launch date as March/April and the simultaneous launch of the Galaxy Gear 2 smart watch.

In Bloomberg’s interview, He also said, “Many people are fanatical about iris recognition technology,” and added that it could be included in the Galaxy S5, but has not been decided just yet.” We are studying the possibility but can’t really say whether we will have it or not on the S5,” she added. Whether or not it has an iris scanner, the addition of an Apple TouchID-style fingerprint scanner is also a possibility, according to reports. Hit-and-miss news source DigiTimes claims to have heard from “industry sources”.

Grand 2 vs. Grand

Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 vs Galaxy Grand: Is it worth the difference?

 Is it worth the difference?
Samsung has just launched the Grand 2 in India and will make the device available for about Rs 23,000 and it will take the torch from its current version, the Grand which is on sale for about Rs 18,000. We find out if you should go in for the upgrade.
New DelhiWith the arrival of the new generation of Samsung Galaxy Grand, there is plenty of anxiety amongst the Samsung loyalists whether to upgrade to the new phone or stick to their tried tested and loved original version. We have simplified this for you by comparing the two devices. Let see which one leads therace-
Display- As compared to the 5 Inch TFT LCD Display of the oldie, the new Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 has got 5.25-inch HD display which is surely better than its senior.
Camera- The new Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 comes with 8 megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front camera. This is same as the old Galaxy Grand. This is a major disappointment for those who were waiting for the launch.
Processor- 1.5GHz quad-core processor runs on Galaxy Grand 2 while Galaxy Grand was run by a 1.2 GHz processor. This isn’t as much improvement as expected by us.
Operating System- The older sibling runs on Android 4.1 OS and the new one works on Android 4.3. This is a big improvement and will enhance the overall graphical user experience on the new device.
Memory- Grand 2 has 8GB of internal memory and an expandable memory of up to 64GB via a microSD card. This is same as its predecessor. It is again a letdown for those who were hoping for larger internal memory specifications.
Battery- 2,600 mAh battery powers Samsung Grand 2. Hence, it can give you a much longer backup as compared to the 2,100 mAh  powerhouse in the Samsung Galaxy Grand.
Price- The average market price for Samsung Galaxy Grand is Rs 22999 while for its previous generation, you need to pay about Rs 18,000.

Prior to the release of the S View Flip Cover, Samsung had sold a wireless charging back and an S View Flip Cover separately, but now, Galaxy Note 3 owners no longer have to buy both accessories a la carte.  Instead, the new Wireless Charging S View Flip Cover is sold as one accessory, and it’s now available for owners of the Galaxy Note 3.  Users, however, will have to buy a wireless charger a la carte in order to use the wireless charging functionality of the new cover.  Rumors suggest that it may also be offered in a version for the Galaxy S4, but as the Galaxy S5 is so close to being launched, there’s a possibility Samsung may wait for the Galaxy S5’s revelation before launching Wireless Charging S View Flip Covers for other devices.

The new peripheral allows device owners to view select alerts and the time without having to remove the cover from the Galaxy Note 3’s display.  It also supports the S Pen, which allows for interaction with the display and the ability to view other notifications and info.  Additionally, users can swipe to answer or reject calls, or to open the camera app, view missed notifications, and do a few other functions.  The cover’s wireless charging functionality works with Qi wireless chargers, including those for the Google Nexus smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini (Verizon Wireless )Review

The Galaxy S4 Mini is essentially a shrunken version of the Galaxy S4. While the original S4 measures 5.3 x 2.7 x 0.25 inches and weighs 4.6 ounces, the S4 Mini is a smaller but thicker 4.9 x 2.5 x 0.35 inches and a scant 3.9 ounces. The S4's size falls between Motorola's Droid Mini, which measures 4.8 x 2.4 x 0.34 inches, and HTC's One Mini, which measures 5.2 x 2.5 x 0.36 inches. Both the One Droid Mini and One Mini are heftier than the Samsung, weighing 4.6 ounces and 4.4 ounces, respectively.
The S4 Mini owes its lighter body to its plastic chassis. The Droid Mini includes a Kevlar fiber unibody design, while the HTC One Mini comes with a more-premium aluminum back.
Though smaller than the original S4, the Mini has no other major differences in design. The power button is still located along the Mini's silver-trimmed right edge, while the volume rocker is on the left side. The Galaxy S4 Mini houses an IR Blaster on top along with a headphone jack, while a microUSB port sits on the bottom edge. You'll find a Verizon logo on top of the home button beneath the screen, a touch we could do without given that there's another Verizon logo on the back.
The rear of the S4 Mini is identical to its larger sibling. You get a camera (8-megapixels instead of the standard S4's 13-MP) with a single flash. The S4 Mini's speaker is at the bottom of this panel. Like the original S4, the Mini's rear is removable, so you can access the user-replaceable battery and microSD and micro SIM card slots.

Display

Like the Droid Mini and One Mini, the Galaxy S4 Mini has a 4.3-inch display. However, the S4 Mini's screen offers the lowest resolution in its class at 940 x 540 pixels, whereas both the Droid Mini and One Mini sport 1280 x 720 panels. On the plus side, colors look more lively on the S4 Mini's Super AMOLED display than on both the One Mini (Super LCD 2) and Droid Mini (TFT LCD). Blues and greens popped off of the screen, and blacks looked much deeper.
During a trailer for "X-Men: Days of Future Past," the S4 Mini's color and clarity blew us away. The Droid Mini's display was a little too heavy on red, while the One Mini looked washed out.
Unfortunately, at 267 lux, the S4 Mini's display is far dimmer than the category average of 405 lux. The HTC One Mini's display came in at 405 lux, while the Droid Mini reached an impressive 540 lux. With such a low display-brightness, viewing the S4 Mini in direct sunlight can be a challenge.

Audio

The Galaxy S4 Mini's rear speaker produced some of the grainiest audio we've heard from a smartphone in recent memory. Pusha-T's "Nosestalgia" sounded flat and tinny, while Coheed and Cambria's "Flame of Error" offered raspy guitars. The Droid Mini sounded far better, giving us at least a hint of bass, while the HTC One Mini and its front-facing BoomSound speakers and Beats Audio provided the best sound by far.
On the LAPTOP Audio Test, which involves playing a continuous tone at a distance of 13 inches, the Galaxy S4 Mini reached a maximum volume of 79 decibels. That's lower than the category average of 80 dB, as well as the HTC One Mini's 81 dB. The Droid Mini offered the loudest speakers, reaching 86 dB.

Interface

The Galaxy S4 Mini has the same Android 4.2.2 operating system and TouchWiz overlay found on the Galaxy S4 and its other permutations. Unlike the original S4, however, there is no update to Android 4.3 yet.
By default, the S4 Mini's lock screen has five shortcuts (Phone, Messaging, Google Now, Email and Camera), but can be customized to your liking. Unlock the handset, and you get access to five home screens, which can be increased to a total of seven. The main home screen features a weather and clock widget, Google search bar and shortcuts to the Email, Calendar, Camera and Play Store apps. At the bottom of the screen are five customizable shortcuts to the Phone, Contacts, Messaging and Chrome apps, as well as the apps drawer.

You don't get quite as many quick settings in the S4 Mini's notification drawer as on the S4. Whereas the larger S4 has a whopping 21 shortcuts, the S4 Mini offers just 15. So what's missing? Mostly things that are more conducive to a smartphone with a larger display, such as Air Gesture, Air View, Multi Window mode, Reading Mode, Smart Pause and Smart Scroll. None of the aforementioned features are found on the S4 Mini.

Keyboard

Though the S4 Mini offers the same SwiftKey-powered keyboard as the standard S4, typing on the Mini with one hand was easier. We didn't have to stretch our thumbs nearly as far to reach letters on the opposite side of the screen, which lead to fewer typos in our messages. If you get tired of tapping letters, you can always enable the keyboard's SwitftKey Flow setting to trace words. A predictive text option also improves the typing experience.

Apps

In addition to the standard array of Google apps, including Chrome, Gmail, Google+, the Play Store and YouTube, Samsung loaded the Galaxy S4 Mini with a host of the company's own proprietary apps. Users get S Memo, the Siri-like S Voice, S Translator and the Samsung Hub store. The Included WatchOn app, which works in tandem with the S4 Mini's IR Blaster, lets you control your TV and entertainment center, as well as search for upcoming shows and movies based on your cable or satellite provider.
Verizon apps include Verizon Cloud, Mobile Hotspot, My Verizon Mobile, Verizon Tunes, VZ Protect and VZ Navigator. You'll want to avoid the last one as it will charge you a fee to do something Google Navigation does for free. Additional third-party apps include Amazon, Kindle, Audible, Flipboard, IMDb, Polaris Office 5 and TripAdvisor.

Performance

With the Galaxy S4 Mini's smaller size comes a more entry-level CPU. This handset uses a Qualcomm 1.7-GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 chip and 1.5GB of RAM, rather than the Snapdragon 600 CPU and 2GB of RAM found in the full-size Galaxy S4. Though the Mini proved relatively speedy in day-to-day usage, its less-powerful specs put it behind the Droid Mini's X8 computing system (Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU plus Adreno 320 CPU).
For example, it took the S4 Mini seven minutes and 19 seconds to transcode a 204MB, 1080p video to 480p using Vidtrim. That's nearly a minute faster than the smartphone category average of 8:15, and the HTC One (10:06). However, the Droid Mini completed the same test in 6:35.
The S4 Mini opened the game "N.O.V.A. 3" in 18 seconds, the same amount of time it took the original S4. Both times are faster than the HTC One Mini's 20-second open-time, but slower than the Droid Mini and category average (both 15 seconds).
On Quadrant, which tests a smartphone's overall system performance, the S4 Mini scored 7,895, barely beating the category average of 7,884. The HTC One Mini scored 6,155, while the Droid Mini scored a higher 8,736.
A similar theme continued on the Geekbench 3 multi-core benchmark; the Galaxy S4 Mini scored 1,087, better than the HTC One (745) but lower than the Droid Mini (1,258).
In terms of graphics performance, the Galaxy S4 Mini scored 4,915 on the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited benchmark. That's better than the HTC One Mini's 4,026, but less than the average smartphone (7,374) and the Droid Mini (11,408).

Camera and Camcorder

Although the S4 Mini has an 8-MP camera, as opposed to the 13-MP camera in the full-size S4, the image quality is still quite good. In fact, most shots we took with the two devices looked nearly identical. Compared to the Droid Mini and HTC One Mini, however, the S4 Mini's photos left much to be desired.

A photo of a bouquet of flowers shot with the S4 Mini looked washed out compared to the Droid Mini. Among the three handsets, the One Mini captured the best images, offering the most vibrant colors and sharpest details. Similarly, an image of Union Square Park looked best when taken with the One Mini. Details were not only clearer, but also brighter than those taken with the S4 Mini and Droid Mini.
A 1080p video shot with the S4 Mini looked clear and lacked artifacts. Colors were also relatively accurate, though they looked too dark at times.
The S4 Mini's 1.9-MP front camera offered clean, vibrant images. Fine details (such as the lines around our subject's eyes) were easily visible, and the color of his shirt was spot on.
Like the full-size S4, the Mini includes a host of shooting modes, including Best Face Mode, Continuous Shot, and Sound and Shot. Best Face Mode captures several images of your subject's face, letting you choose which one looks best. Continuous Shot lets you capture a series of images in succession, so that you can choose the one you like most. Sound and Shot allows you to shoot a photo and record nine seconds of audio with it.
Samsung has left some S4 camera features on the cutting room floor. You don't get Drama Shot, which lets you take multiple pictures of a subject moving across the screen, shots that the device then stitches together. You also won't find Eraser Mode or the Animated Photo Mode .gif creator.

4G LTE Peformance

The S4 Mini rides on Verizon's massive 4G LTE network, though it doesn't get access to the carrier's super-fast AWS upgrades like the original S4 does. In Central New Jersey, we recorded average download speeds of 45 Mbps and uploads of 23 Mbps on the Speedtest.net app. When we took the handset to our office near the Flatiron building in Manhattan, however, our connectivity came to a screeching slow-down, with downloads and uploads averaging 770 Kbps Mbps and 10 Kbps, respectively.

Battery Life

With its 2,000 mAh battery, the S4 Mini lasted just five hours and 40 minutes on our LAPTOP Battery Test, which involves continuous Web surfing over 4G LTE with the display brightness set to 40 percent. That's better than the Droid Mini's 5:04 and AT&T's HTC One Mini's 5:38, but about an hour short of the smartphone category average of 6:44. The original Galaxy S4 lasted a similarly short 5:25 on Verizon.
